Essential Oils & The Emotional Benefits

The use of essential oils and plant extracts have been used for emotional benefits for thousands of years. The ancient Greeks, Romans, Chinese, and Indians used essential oils for rituals and religious practices, recognizing the oils’ ability to influence human feelings. Unfortunately the medical industry does not want us to know this. Whenever people ask me about essential oils and question the "actual" benefit I just tell them to go ahead and do some research on them because there is PLENTY to support all of the fabulous benefits! More and more studies show how chemical sensors in the body respond to scent. Aromatherapy is making advances into the medical industry and mainstreams of society because substantial evidence shows the remarkable effects on human emotions.

Ok so now that we know this stuff is real let's get into the flavors that can inspire, ignite, calm, and sooth our souls. Floral essential oils are typically known for calming properties. Tree, herb, and grass oils are known to promote grounding, soothing emotions and feelings of renewal and rejuvenation. Minty essential oils are commonly known to be energizing and uplifting and citrus oils promote uplifting characteristics as well. Many spice essential oils are known for their warming and soothing properties.

However what is good for the goose may not be good for the gander. For example, I love Lavender it helps me with my migraines, it promotes a restful sleep it calms my kids down when they are bouncing off the walls but my husband hates it! He swears it gives him a headache. My girlfriends husband swears it makes sleeping more difficult. We all have unique personalities and respond to experiences differently. We cope with our emotions differently and we respond to senes differently. Just as you may love one perfume and someone else can hate it, it is a personal experience and one you should explore and respect.

There are lots of ways to altering your mood and as we know it can be different for each person. Unfortunately many people manage their mood with unhealthy habits like overeating, indulging in dangerous activities, taking drugs, drinking, you name it! When you are unhappy you do whatever you find that makes you feel better and many times we reach to destructive habits over positive ones. The trick is finding healthy alternatives to controlling or managing your moods. Essential oils provide a natural and healthy way to manage your mood and there are hundreds and hundreds of options to customize the benefits for each person. Another awesome component is essential oils work immediately just from opening the bottle and breathing the aroma in. If you apply to your skin (largest organ) they work fast. We all want immediate gratification and these natural gifts do just that! Above all, would't it be nice to replace harmful medications and bad habits you may be using to find comfort in your discomfort?

You may be feeling overwhelmed by all of this info and don't fret! What does diffuse mean? How do I apply? Where can I buy? I know I know and it's not so complicated at all! Essential Oils can be purchased all over the place now a days. However please please read the labels. If you find one that is very cheap there is likely a reason! First thing you want to make sure is that the oil is pure, meaning there are no other ingredients other than pure essential oils. Also, make sure they are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade! CPTG will be clearly marked on the bottle. Make sure the oil is in a glass bottle as plastics will be drawn into the oil. Read the bottles, some oils need to be diluted to apply directly to the skin others do not. Some are for diffusing, meaning they need to be dropped into water in a diffuser. If you really want to make it easy I recommend purchasing doTERRA's emotional set. It comes with a few oils to start and information to get you going. Some kit's include a diffuser too. I recommend doTERRA for many reasons but mostly because they are the largest essential oil company in the world and they have unparalleled quality.
